2016 National Weather Service Topeka Open House

The National Weather Service Topeka office will be hosting an Open House on Saturday, October 1st, 2016.  The Open House is FREE to the public.  Office tours will begin at         10 AM and will end at 3 PM.  

The Open House will be a great opportunity to learn about the day-to-day operations at a National Weather Service office, to learn how meteorologists operate during severe weather, and to interact with several local TV/radio media and local/state organizations that work closely with the NWS to help promote weather preparedness and weather safety. 

The Open House will be filled with numerous activities and booths, including:  

  • National Weather Service office tours every 20 minutes
  • Weather balloon launches every hour 
  • Tour Shawnee County's mobile emergency command center/catastrophe bus 
  • Special Weather Presentations:  
    • "Forecasting the World's Most Extreme Weather:  An Overview of Kansas Tornadoes, Hail, Wind, Flooding, and Fires"
      • 10:40 AM and 1:40 PM
    • "Basic Weather Forecasting 101:  An Overview of How Forecasts are Made"
      • 11:40 AM and 2:40 PM
  • Participate in interactive weather experiments (perfect for kids!)
  • Meet Leon the Lion, our NWS Lightning Safety Mascot
  • Raffles to win NOAA weather radios 
  • ... and so much more!!!

Click on the Register tab to reserve a spot for one of the office tours!  Please print your tour tickets and bring them with you to the Open House.  Please plan to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the start of your registered tour time.  

Restrictions

No Drugs, Weapons, Alcohol, Backpacks, Briefcases or Smoking Allowed on Premises.

No Pets Allowed. Service Animals Permitted.
